Welcome to the land of the Pharaohs and famous Queens. The very name of Egypt invites exotic images of the desert, the Nile, temples, pyramids and the great treasures that have excited the world since the tomb of King Tutankhamen was discovered in 1922. We look forward to welcoming you to Cairo, the city of 1,000 minarets. Founded in 969 AD, Cairo is not only Africa’s largest city, but also a political and cultural center, and an important bridge between the Arab world and the West. The city’s old quarters retain their ancient charm, with many streets still known by descriptions given to them by medieval chroniclers. Modern Cairo’s architecture is distinguished by Ottoman and European influences, particularly as the city’s population boomed during the 19th century. Today you will find a vast array of art galleries and music venues, in addition to luxurious hotels, fine restaurants, extensive leisure activities and shopping galore. |

Day 02: (Saturday) CAIRO.
This morning we will visit the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile River to see the two most famous sites in all of Egypt. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. A single pyramid is built of 2,300,000 blocks, each weighing an average of 2.5 tons. You may be surprised to discover that the legendary pyramids are merely the tip of the archaeological iceberg. Nearby is the Sphinx, hewn from natural yellowish limestone, with the head of a Pharaoh and the body of a lion. Standing 65 feet high and 187 feet long, it is one of the largest single-stone statues on earth, and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians in the 3rd millennium BC.
We will mount camels for a short ride near the Pyramids, followed by lunch at a specialty restaurant. In the afternoon we'll tour Memphis, which served as the capital of Upper and Lower Egypt some 5,000 years ago during the 1st Dynasty. Here, the first pharaoh of this dynasty, Menes, built a great white-walled palace and the Temple of Ptah. Next we will visit Sakkara, one of the most exciting historical and archaeological sites in all of Egypt. It is dominated by the famous Step Pyramid, the first pyramid to be built in ancient Egypt, preceding by many centuries even those at Giza.

Day 03: (Sunday) CAIRO / LUXOR.
After a short flight we will arrive in Luxor and will travel just 38 miles north to Dendera, an ancient capital of Egypt that lies at the desert's edge. Included among the several most important temples of Egypt, the Temple of Hathor at Dendera provides a superb example of the rich variety of features found in later temple design. It is a rare sight to behold, complete with a massive stone roof, dark chambers, underground passages and towering columns inscribed with hieroglyphs. The main temple is nearly intact. Hathor, the ancient Egyptian goddess of love and joy, was what Aphrodite was to the Greeks, and Venus to the Romans. She was usually represented as a cow, or a woman with a cow's head, and was worshipped as the beneficent deity of maternal and family love, of beauty and light.
Nearby is the large archaeological site of Abydos, one of the holiest places in ancient Egypt for pilgrimages and burial. It was believed that the head of Osiris - the god of the afterlife - was buried at Abydos, making it the gateway to the underworld. The main monument at Abydos is the Temple of Seti I, built around 1300 BC by Seti and his son Ramses II. It is especially notable for its fine reliefs, considered among the best of the New Kingdom. Later, we will return to Luxor and check-in at our hotel where you will have the rest of the day at leisure.
Classical elegance and contemporary décor are the hallmarks of the 5-star Sonesta St George. Located on the banks of the Nile, in the center of Luxor's shopping district, the hotel is luxurious, sophisticated and above all, elegant. Richly marbled bathrooms and soft lavish fabrics create a relaxing atmosphere in each guest room. Comfort is assured with luxurious bedding, a separate sitting area, air conditioning, direct-dial telephone, LCD TV, high-speed internet access, mini bar, digital safe, and a hair dryer in the bathroom. Leisure amenities include a well-equipped fitness center and health spa, outdoor heated pool and an array of fine dining choices at 8 restaurants and lounges.

Day 4: (Monday) LUXOR / NILE CRUISE.
Following breakfast we will check-out and board our deluxe Nile cruiser, the M/S TuYa. Launched in 2006, our 5-star floating hotel offers 62 outside cabins with panoramic view windows. Each cabin is tastefully decorated and features one king or two twin beds, individual climate control, telephone, LCD TV with satellite channels, mini bar, and safety deposit box. In the bathroom you will find a hair dryer, bathrobes, and deluxe amenities. There are 3 dining facilities and lounges that offer a diverse menu of both buffet and a la carte selections. Additional amenities include a spa with hair salon, massage service, sauna and exercise equipment. The sun deck invites you with padded lounge chairs, a pool, shaded sitting section and daily bar service. Following check-in, it's time to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch on the ship.
This afternoon we tour Luxor where we will visit the Temple of Karnak. This vast open-air museum is the oldest and largest ancient religious site in the world, and is probably the second most visited historical complex in Egypt, after the Giza Pyramids near Cairo. It is comprised of three main temples, smaller enclosed temples, and several outer temples - all constructed over a period of 1300 years. Next we will see the imposing Temple of Luxor, built largely by Amenhotep III and Ramses II. This temple served as a setting for the rituals of the festival of Opet, which was held to reconcile the human aspect of the ruler with his divine office. The procession of images of the current royal family began at Karnak and ended at Luxor Temple.
This evening we are invited to join the Captain for a welcome cocktail reception, followed by a gala candlelight dinner with music and entertainment.

Day 05: (Tuesday) LUXOR / ESNA / EDFU.
This morning we cross the Nile to visit the West Bank of Luxor. Here, we will tour the Valley of the Kings, a vast City of the Dead where magnificent tombs were carved into the desert rocks, decorated richly, and filled with treasures for the afterlife by generations of Pharaohs. We'll also have the chance to visit at least one tomb in the Valley of the Queens. An optional hot air balloon ride over the Luxor Valley at sunrise is a special thrill that can be arranged. Rising out of the desert plain in a series of terraces, the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut - Ancient Egypt's only female Pharaoh - merges with the sheer limestone cliffs that surround it. On the way back to the river, the road passes by the famed Colossi of Memnon, two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III known in Ancient Greek times for their haunting voices at dawn.
Once back on the ship we will cruise to Esna, crossing the locks as we enjoy lunch. The afternoon is a delightful drift past scenic mountains and golden desert as we watch the setting sun in total relaxation from the deck. Tonight, as we sail on to Eduf, we will dine on another sumptuous meal, followed by music and belly dancing lessons.

Day 06: (Wednesday) EDFU / KOM OMBO / ASWAN.
We begin today with a visit to the wonderfully preserved Temple of Horus at Edfu, the largest and most completely preserved Pharaonic - albeit Greek-built - temple in Egypt. Our royal entrance to and from the temple will be in a horse-drawn carriage! Following lunch, we will arrive at Kom Ombo. The Temple of Kom Ombo is an unusual double temple built on a high dune overlooking the Nile during the Ptolemaic dynasty. One side of the temple is dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, god of fertility and creator of the world. The other side is dedicated to the falcon god Haroeris, also known as Horus the Elder. A few of the three-hundred crocodile mummies discovered in the vicinity are displayed inside the temple. This evening we sail on to Aswan, while enjoying a lovely dinner and a Nubian Folkloric dance show.

Day 07: (Thursday) ASWAN.
The Aswan High Dam, just north of the border between Egypt and Sudan, is a huge rock-filled dam that captures the world's longest river in the world's largest artificial reservoir, Lake Nasser. Without the dam, the Nile would flood each summer with waters that flow from East Africa. Two additional purposes are to generate electricity and provide water for agriculture. At the Granite Quarries we will see the famous Unfinished Obelisk. Had it not cracked as it was being hewn from the rock, it would have weighed over 2.3 million pounds and would have been the world's largest piece of stone ever handled. Tools left by its builders have given archaeologists much insight into how such work was performed. Afterwards we take a motorboat ride to visit the island of Philae where the exquisite sandstone Temple of Philae was dedicated to the goddess Isis. Of the many legends associated with Isis, the most well-known tells the story of how Isis discovered the heart of Osiris here after his murder by his brother Seth.
The fascinating insights that our private Egyptologist will share with us continues today, far beyond just the history of antiquities. This afternoon she will take you to the famous Aswan Spice Market. Here is where the daily life of Egyptians comes alive, and she will delight in acquainting you with the warm and hospitable locals who live and work here. Next, you will tour the Nubian Museum, a beautifully landscaped complex that houses the thousands of objects rescued in the early 1960's before the rising waters of Lake Nasser submerged them forever. After lunch, when the winds should pick up, we'll enjoy sailing on a felucca along the Nile to the Botanical Gardens. Back on the ship, our festive farewell dinner will include a traditional Galabeya costume party. Plan to dress up in your most Egyptian attire and celebrate our final night on the Nile.

Optional Morning Tour to Abu Simbel (USD 325 per person)
The Greater Temple of Abu Simbel is generally considered the grandest and most beautiful of the temples commissioned during the reign of Ramses II, and one of the most awe-inspiring in Egypt. The first hall of the temple features eight statues of the deified Ramses II in the shape of Osiris, serving as pillars. The walls depict scenes of Egyptian victories in Libya, Syria and Nubia, including images from the Battle of Kadesh. The second hall depicts Ramses and Nefertari with the sacred boats of Amun and Ra-Horakthy. Total time for the excursion, out and back from Aswan, is about 4 hours. This includes a full 2 hours at the temples which is plenty of time to see everything. Cost includes airport transfers, round-trip flights on an Egyptair jet at 50 minutes each, staff assistance and the temple tour.
For those who remain in Aswan for the morning, our staff will coordinate a visit to a local bazaar.
Later, we will transfer to the airport for the short flight to Cairo where we will check into our hotel, the Cairo Marriott Hotel & Omar Khayyam Casino. Set amidst six acres of lush, tranquil gardens in downtown Cairo, the hotel was built around a nineteenth century palace on an island in the Nile River. All guest rooms provide breathtaking views of the surroundings. Additional room features include air conditioning, direct-dial telephone, TV, mini bar, coffee/tea maker, electronic safe, iron and ironing board, and refrigerator. In the bathroom is a soaking tub with separate shower and a hair dryer. The hotel has more than twelve restaurants and bars, and entertainment that showcases the most famous singers and belly dancers. After check-in, we will have the rest of the day to enjoy this exotic metropolis.

Day 09: (Saturday) CAIRO.
This morning our tour of Cairo will include a visit to the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, known commonly as the Egyptian Museum. Home to the most extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities in the world, the museum has over 136,000 items on display, with many more hundreds of thousands in its basement storerooms. Accompanied by our private Egyptologist, we will stoll through the halls as she brings to life each historical period. The highlight of the collection is considered to be the riches of King Tut, whose nearly intact tomb was found in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. Afterwards we'll explore Old Cairo, the ancient quarter full of Jewish, Coptic and Islamic monuments. We'll visit the Citadel and the Amr Ibn el Aas Mosque, see the Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the ruins of Babylon Fortress.
Tonight will be the perfect evening to return to Giza for an optional Sound & Light show for anyone interested. It is a spectacular sight. Nothing compares to seeing the Pyramids and the Sphinx illuminated at night; the visual effects as well as dramatic commentary make for an unforgettable experience.

Day 10: (Sunday) CAIRO.
Rise at your leisure this morning, with a full day of optional activities to choose from. After looking at all that magnificent treasure in the museum, shoppers will be ready to browse and buy! Along with our guide, you can choose to join her at the famous Khan el Khalili Bazaar where travelers have been finding great bargains since the middle ages. Cairo is known as a shopping paradise for those seeking antiques, Bedouin handicrafts and silver jewelry.
Optional Full Day Tour to Alexandria with lunch (USD 180 per person)
Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Alexandria is Egypt's second largest city and main port. We'll explore the well-preserved ruins of the Roman Amphitheater, the Alexandria Library, and the outside of Fort Qaitbey. Round trip transfers, guided tour and lunch at a local restaurant are included. Return to the hotel is in the early evening.
While we are in Cairo we will have the honor of an invitation to meet members of the Blind Girls' Orchestra, in what will surely be a moving and inspiring experience. In 1954, a group of women established the Al Nour Wal Amal (Light and Hope) Association as the first center in Egypt for the education, vocational training and care of visually-impaired girls. Seven years later, a music institute was created and later gave birth to the Egyptian Blind Girls' Chamber Orchestra. The goal of the orchestra and the institute is to introduce girls to an art form that visually-challenged musicians can excel in, and which allows them a creative way to express their emotions. Starting with a choir of 15 girls, the group grew to its present 38-member repertory. It was founded by Samha El-Kohly former president of the Egyptian Academy of Arts, Ministry of Culture, and the former dean of the Cairo Conservatory of Music. The Orchestra has achieved great status worldwide, traveling abroad to enthral listeners with the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and other classical composers.
This evening, a special farewell dinner will be held under the stars at the hotel.

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was founded by King Abdullah I after World War 1. His grandson, the late King Hussein, ruled it for 46 years until his death in 1999. Since then, the country has continued to grow into a modern nation under the leadership of Hussein's son, King Abdullah II. Today Jordan enjoys a remarkable measure of peace, stability and economic growth. It is a land of mesmerizing beauty and contrasts, from the fertile Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea, to immense desert canyons and the lost city of Petra. Unveiled to the West by its discovery in 1812, Petra is the country's most valuable treasure. Carved from rock over two thousand years ago, it has long been most people's first impression of Jordan. Our stay will include a full day discovering the wonders of Petra, as well as the highlights of Amman, the capital of Jordan and another fascinating city to see and experience. |

TOUR ITINERARY: |
|
 |
|
 |
 |
 |
| |
Day 1: (Monday) CAIRO/ AMMAN/ PETRA.
In the morning you will join the group transfer to the Cairo Airport for the short Egypt Air flight to Amman. When you arrive at Queen Alia International Airport, you will be met by our local representatives who will assist you with your luggage, customs procedures, and passport formalities. You will then be escorted outside to meet your private driver. The distance to Petra is about 200 km (125 mi) south. As we travel along the picturesque Kings Highway, we will stop to visit a number of extraordinary sites.
Madaba, "the City of Mosaics," is one of the most memorable places in the Holy Land. A prime attraction is the contemporary Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, where a 6th century Byzantine mosaic design on the floor depicts a wonderfully vivid map of Jerusalem and other holy sites. Created with two million pieces of colored stone, it is a masterpiece to behold.
The most revered holy site in Jordan is Mount Nebo, the place where Moses was buried. Located atop an elevated ridge overlooking the Dead Sea, one can view the vast panorama that also encompasses the Jordan River Valley, Jericho, and Jerusalem, often referred to as the Holy Land. The Serpentine Cross, which stands just outside the sanctuary, is symbolic of the brass serpent taken by Moses into the desert, and the cross upon which Jesus was crucified. As we continue, we'll pass by Wadi Al Mujib, a scenic nature reserve with small rivers and waterfalls running through it - one of many in Jordan - that also happens to be the lowest one in the world.
We will visit Crusader Castle, an ancient castle located in the city of Karak that overlooks the Dead Sea. This is where the first contact between Islam and the non-Arab/Byzantine world occurred. A dark maze of stone-vaulted walls and endless passageways, the castle is one of the three largest in the region, the other two being in Syria.
Just 7 miles southeast of Petra is where we will check into our hotel, the quite unique Taybet Zaman, where you are free for dinner and relaxation. The town of Taybet Zaman was an authentic old Bedouin village carved out of the mountains. After it was abandoned in the 1960s, the entire village of 105 original stone houses was converted into a resort hotel. Each house, now a guest room, is furnished with Bedouin rugs and fabrics, and features private bathrooms, satellite TV, direct dial telephone, mini-bar and a hairdryer. While recapturing the spirit of 19th century style of living, guests can sample the old charming beauty of the area without sacrificing modern comforts. The village is complete with stone alleyways, a piazza, an Arab hammam (bath) and a souk (bazaar). Overnight Petra

Day 2: (Tuesday) PETRA.
Following breakfast at hotel, we'll set out to tour the "Red Rose City" of Petra, without doubt Jordan's most valuable treasure. It is a vast, awe-inspiring place, carved into the sheer rock by the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled here more than 2,000 years ago. As an important junction for the silk and spice trade routes, it linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome. By the 14th century, Petra was completely lost to the West, and so it remained for almost 300 years. Then in 1812, a Swiss traveler named Johann Ludwig Burckhardt persuaded his guide to take him to the rumored lost city where he made secret notes and sketches. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Petra is preserved for the ages.
Upon arrival we will take a short ride by horseback from the main entrance, through the Siq - a huge crack in the Nubian sandstone - to reach the Treasury, Petra's most famous monument. The location has been famously featured in such Hollywood blockbusters as "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and "The Mummy Returns." We'll visit the 3,000-seat Roman Theater, the Temple of the Winged Lion, a Palace Tomb, the Courts, and Qasr al-Bint, the only surviving freestanding building. The guided tour lasts for about 3 hours, after which you are free to explore on your own. Those interested have the option to climb over 900 rock-cut stairs to reach a gigantic 1st century Monastery.

Day 3: (Wednesday) PETRA / AMMAN.
After breakfast we will depart for Amman and a tour of this capital city of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Amman reflects an interesting mix of ancient and modern civilizations, where Ammonites, Greek, Roman, Byzantines, and Moslems all left their footprints in and around the city. The Citadel is an excellent place to see the archaeological sites of the city. Not only do the excavations here reveal numerous ancient remains, but its mountaintop location provides a stunning view of the entire area. We'll tour the National Archaeological Museum to see a collection of unusual historic finds, including famous Dead Sea Scrolls, preserved skulls and rhinoceros teeth that date back 200,000 years. A visit through Amman's much older Downtown Market and City Center reveals its traditional souks, coffee shops, and cafes that sell local food and sweets. A wide assortment of shopping centers and arcades offer everything from intricate gold and silver jewelry to everyday items. There is plenty of nightlife, from cultural and theatrical events to traditional Arabic entertainment, modern restaurants and clubs.
In the afternoon we will check into the 4-star Imperial Palace Hotel. Located in an affluent area of west Amman, the hotel is only 10 minutes from the vibrant downtown district, and just 30 minutes from the airport. A concierge is available around the clock to offer assistance and to help you make the best of your stay. Guest rooms feature modern amenities including Wi-Fi internet access, satellite TV, direct dial telephone, air conditioning, coffee/tea maker, iron and ironing board, slippers, bathrobes and a hair dryer in the bathroom. Complimentary fruits offer extra refreshment.
