Christian pilgrimage in Jordan

  Tour Itinerary:

DAY 1: AMMAN.
Arrival at Queen Alia International Airport where our guests would be assisted through formalities and passport control, later on, guests would proceed to their hotel in Amman for over night.

DAY 2: AMMAN - DEAD SEA.
After breakfast, guests would begin their trip to south from Amman along the 5,000-year-old King's Highway which is one of the most memorable journeys in the Holy Land, passing through a string of ancient sites. The first city you come upon is Madaba (Saint George's Church), "the City of Mosaics". Madaba's chief attraction -in the contemporary Greek Orthodox church of St. George- is a wonderfully vivid, sixth-century Byzantine mosaic map showing Jerusalem and other holy sites. Ten minutes to the west is the most revered site in Jordan: Mount Nebo, the memorial of Moses, the presumed site of the prophet's death and burial place. A small, square church was built on the spot by early Byzantine Christians-and later expanded into a vast complex. Later guests will proceed to biblical Bethany; it is believed to be the place where John baptized Jesus. Bethany's ancient remains include structures from the 1st century settlement of John the Baptist, including large plastered pools with steps for full immersion, and the 5th-6th century remains of the Byzantine period settlement called Ainon or Saphsaphas and depicted on the 6th century Madaba Mosaic Map of the Holy Land. After the tour, guests will proceed to Dead Sea for over night.

DAY 3: DEAD SEA - PETRA.
After breakfast, guests will be transferred to Mkawer. There, it is said, the beautiful Salomé danced for Herod Antipas, who presented her with the head of the Prophet Yahya or John the Baptist to honor her wishes. According to Matthew 14: 9-12, "The king was sad, but because of the promise he had made in front of all his guests, he gave orders that her wish be granted. So he had John beheaded in prison. The head was brought in on a plate to the girl, who took it to her mother." The fort was perched on a 700-meter-high hill which was first fortified about 100 BCE, and expanded by Herod the Great seventy years later. The greatest attraction of Machaerus, however, is the stunning panoramic view it presents of the surrounding countryside, the Dead Sea, and the West Bank. Later guests will proceed to Umm Arrasas; the rectangular walled city mentioned in the Old and New Testaments. The main attraction, though, lies outside the city walls: it is the newly unearthed Church of St. Stephen with its perfectly preserved remarkable mosaic floor, the largest one in Jordan. It contains the images and portraits of 27 Old and New Testament cities of the Holy Land from both east and west of the Jordan River and of Egypt, making it a discovery second only to the Mosaic Map of Madaba.

Later proceed further south to Kerak. It is famous of its crusader fortress in the center of underground galleries, rooms and secret passageways and its thick defensive walls pierced by narrow arrow slits where crusader archers held out bravely but in vain for over 100 years. It was the crusaders who made Kerak famous. The fortress was built in 1142 by Payen Le Boutellier, the lord of Montreal. He made Kerak the new capital of the province because it was situated on the king's highway, where it could control all traffic from north and south. After the tours, guests would proceed to Petra for check in and over night.

DAY 4: PETRA.
After breakfast, guests would be transferred via the desert way to Petra for a visit along with 800-meters horse ride. Hidden behind an almost impenetrable barrier of rugged mountains, the legendary "Red - Rose" city of Petra is, perhaps, the most stunning site in the entire Middle East, carved out of craggy rocks by the Nabateans, an industrious Arab people who settled in the South more than 2,000 years ago. The approach through the cool gloom of the Siq, a long narrow gorge whose steeply rising sides all but obliterate the sun, provides a dramatic contrast with the magic to come. Suddenly, the gorge opens into a natural square dominated by Petra's most famous monument, the 'Treasury' [Al Khasneh], who's intricately carved facade glows in the dazzling sun. The Monastery [El Deir] and the High Place of the Sacrifice [Al Madbah] are among the myriad archeological wonders to be explored in Petra. After tour, guests would head back to hotel in Petra.
